On National Day, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will present themselves with their own program at Minoritenplatz in Vienna. Among other things, those interested will learn more about the executive branch and career opportunities in the foreign service.
Virtual program for the army show
This year, as in the previous year, the National Day will largely take place virtually due to Corona, but there will be a little to observe live. In addition to the traditional inauguration of recruits at Heldenplatz, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have come up with an on-site program in downtown Vienna. Of course, you are not allowed to enter the premises this year either.
National holiday program in front of the Ministry of the Interior
Minister of the Interior Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) invites the population to “experience the police profession up close, to get to know special units such as the Cobra or the Alpine Police and to get comprehensive information about the topic of security from the prevention officers of Gemeinsam.Sicher”. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., a program awaits visitors in front of the Ministry on Minoritenplatz. All those who are interested in the police profession will learn more about career opportunities as a police officer at the “recruiting booth” of the executive branch. But other areas of activity of the Ministry of the Interior, such as the State Crisis and Disaster Management or the Civil Defense will also be presented on the national holiday.
Also on site will be the Austrian Red Cross with “Team Austria”, the Federal Fire Brigade Association, the Water Rescue Service, the Police Sea and Stream Service, the Alpine Police, the Cobra Operations Command, the Together.Safe team, the Cave Rescue Service and the Mountain Rescue Service as well as the “Kuratorium Sicheres Österreich”.
Open Day also at the Foreign Ministry
Only a few meters away, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presents itself. Also from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitors can get a first-hand impression of the many areas of responsibility of the department. This year’s open day will focus on crisis management and consular assistance for Austrians abroad.
For those who are interested in a career in the Foreign Ministry themselves, staff from the Human Resources Department will also be on hand to answer questions about career opportunities in the Foreign Service.
Vaccination street in the Vienna Hofburg
This year, visitors will only be allowed into the Hofburg, but also only those who pick up a sting against the Corona infection in the vaccination street set up there. They are granted access to the premises of the Federal President. The parliament presents itself only virtually. 100 recruits are sworn in at Heldenplatz, followed by a Eurofighter flyover including a parachute jump. Politicians celebrate October 26 with wreath-laying ceremonies and a special council of ministers; ORF broadcasts live.
